The Ascent from Hell
Eileen Moore, Andrew White, and members of the music faculty of Cleveland State University
The Ascent From Hell, for soprano, baritone, flute, harp, cello, piano and percussion, on an original text. Duration 8’15”. (1994)
Soprano Eileen Moore commissioned this piece as part of her evening-length recital telling the tale of Orpheus and Eurydice. Despite the numerous musical and poetic versions of this story in existence, she was unable to find a piece which told the story of Orpheus’ return from the Underworld with Eurydice walking behind him, and so she asked me to create one. This lyrical and haunting scene was my response.
