Cityscapes, a song cycle for high baritone and piano on original texts. Duration 12′. (1993)

This was my first song cycle on original texts; it was born of necessity, when I discovered with a deadline looming that I hadn’t gotten the rights to set the poetry I was planning to use. New York City is the subject (hence the mild profanity in the first song!). The five songs range from exuberant to reflective, ending on a wistful note. The third song is based on a true story.

The recordings feature Andrew White, baritone, and David Wolfson, piano. Recorded during a live concert at Merkin Concert Hall in New York City.
