Deep Woods: The Unicorn Sings to Memory

Deep Woods, for soprano and string orchestra. Duration approx 13 minutes (2010, revised 2014). This is a setting of a poem by Peter Beagle, author of the beloved fantasy classic The Last Unicorn.

The poem is the voice of the unicorn, many, many years after the events of the story. You don’t need to have read the book or seen the movie to be moved by the piece; it touches on very human themes of love, loss and sorrow.
The first recording is of a reading by the Rutgers Symphony Orchestra,
conducted by Kynan Johns, with soprano Martha Sullivan. The second is of a performance of a string quartet version by soprano Nadine Robinson and members of the New Brunswick Chamber Orchestra.
