Seventeen Windows

Seventeen Windows, for solo piano, is a group of short piano pieces (yes, 17 of them) ranging from one to three minutes long.

Many years ago I wrote a long, complicated difficult piano piece called The Unreasonable Effectiveness of Math. One pianist I showed it to complained “Why is new music always so hard? Why doesn’t a composer ever show me a new piece with the simplicity and power of a Bach prelude?”

The first of these pieces was a reaction to that comment. The rest were because, upon seeing that piece, Jenny Lin told me, “Write sixteen more of them!”
