Deep Woods: The Unicorn Sings to Memory

Deep Woods, for soprano and string orchestra. Duration approx 13 minutes (2010, revised 2014). This is a setting of a poem by Peter Beagle, author of the beloved fantasy classic The Last Unicorn.

The poem is the voice of the unicorn, many, many years after the events of the story; it touches on very human themes of love, loss and sorrow.
The first recording is of a reading by the Rutgers Symphony Orchestra,
conducted by Kynan Johns, with soprano Martha Sullivan. The second is of a performance of a string quartet version by soprano Nadine Robinson and members of the New Brunswick Chamber Orchestra.
